No internet connection on a Windows 2000 Server virtual machine

Hi everyone

My Windows 2000 server vitual machine still cannot connect to the Internet even though it is on exactly the same subnet as the host. I tried enabling Remote and Routing Access in vain only to find no Internet connection. Is there anything else you need to do other than assigning an IPv4 address to your server virtual machine to be on the same subnet as your Internet enabled host. IP configuration details of the vm and host are as follows:

Windows 2000 Server virtual machine

IP Address: 10.1.1.7

Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

Windows host

IP Address: 10.1.1.5

Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

How did you configure the network settings for your VM in VMware Workstation? Bridged, NAT, Host Only???

Can you ping the host from your VM?

Try setting networking to Bridged.

Thanks for the reply. I tried both NAT and bridge as the network adapter of the server virtual machine. When it is set to Bridge, I was able to ping the host and the router, but there was still no Internet connection. I have got a feeling that this is unique to Windows 2000 server as I have no problem with my Windows Server 2003 in this regard.

If you are able to ping the host in bridged mode, you should also be able to connect to other systems. Did you set the DNS server in your VM?

You can try ping e.g. www.vmware.com from your host, make note of the IP address and try to ping the IP address from your VM.
