failed to initialise remote display subsystem error

Hi,

I have downloaded VMWare Workstation 7.0 trial copy for 30 days onto my Windows XP SP3 host PC.

I previously had VMWare Workstation 5.0.

Whenever I try to open my previous Virtual machines, I get this error message.

Also, if I try to create new virtual Windows XP machine, I get the same error message.

Any ideas what this error means or where to start looking?

The only thing that looks relevant is under Options and Remote Display which is currently Disabled.

Thanks,

Paul

Also, if I click OK to this error, I get cannot find a valid peer process to connect to.

log in as administrator - open a cmd and type

net start vmx86

report what happens

good - then I think your old VMs have some entries for vnc settings in the vmx-file that do not work.

Please reproduce that error and then post the vmware.log file

sorry - I have no idea - I would re-install Workstation and make sure to disable all antivirus and firewalls during the installation

My work tech support have figured it out via sending me a registry setting which fixed it.

Thanks anyway.

I have the same problem. It started after I deleted the __vmware_user__ account. I wanted windows 7 to log on automatically without stopping at the log on screen.

Now Windows 7 is booting directly to the desktop, but VMware workstation is not starting for the same reason stated above.

Creating the __vmware_user__ account again did not solve the problem.

Any Ideas?

OK, quick update.

I have recreated a new user account __vmware_user__ as an administrator and a blank password, and now VMware workstation is working fine.

The problem is that now, my computer boots to the logon screen again.

Found a way to hide the __vmware_user__ from the control pannel by running this command from an elevated command prompt windows:

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList" /v __vmware_user__ /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f

Don't know about windows 7 and if this will work but the attached registry setting solved my problem.

First in the registry, I had to go to HKLM_Security and give Administrators group full permissions (that could be related to our network environment though)

Then I imported the registry setting attached.

This solved the problem on my windows XP host workstation.

Good luck

Ah - interesting - I know that one and used it often in the past for other errors - the one you got was unknown to me.

Thanks for posting

  • Click: Start > Run > Type: "control userpasswords2" > Click: "OK" ("User accounts" window opens);

  • Click the following buttons in sequence:

  • Advanced > Advanced > Users > __vmware_user__ > Additional actions > Features

  • Check the box "Account disabled" and click "Apply", "OK", "OK"

  • Note:

  • Do not remove the user "__vmware_user__" using the button "remove" on the window "User accounts" above.

  • (If you remove this account precisely, it can not open the guest operating systems)

  • This problem is an incompetence of VMware technical team...
