External USB SATA drive

I have ESX4i installed on a Dell PowerEdge T110. It has a local 500gb SATA drive. I want to also connect a 1TB USB SATA drive. How can I set the external USB SATA drive as a another DataStore?

This really isn't a supported configuration. Your best bet is USB over IP

You may be able to get some guidance using VMDirect Path if you have nehalem based system.

Why don't you open the external case and install the disk inside the server?

Also, you have an eSATA connector, if you need an external disk, eSATA is better option than USB.

The T110 is a tower server, you can install up to 4 disks on it (as seen on Dell website).
