VM from ESX to Player?

I'm trying to figure out the best practices for taking a vm off of an iSCSI datastore (vmfs obviously) and deploying it to an individual vmware player install and then bringing it back to ESX. I would prefer to do this without requiring the vmware player to be on the LAN or opening a firewall, but I'm up for suggestions.

the best way is to use VMware Converter (http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vcenter_converter_standalone/4_0)

it allows you to move VMs across VMware products
