Nexus 1000V with CNA Adapter

I had recently installed and configure the cisco 1000V on the UCS platform. I faced 1 of the problem here which I could not fully migrate all the virtual network from the normal vswitch to cisco 1000V. I found that the system will work perfectly if I do not migrate the physical uplink connection which suppose to host the Cisco 1000V connectivity. Anyway, each ESX host are only 2 physical CNA connections. I not sure this is a limitation or there are any workaround on this.

Any suggestion are welcome on this.

actually you can use Nexus 1000v in UCS with CNA Adapter (just 2 nics)

just keep in mind that you require the control and packet vlans on each managed server (also replicate the vlans on UCS manager)

and keep one ESX to host the Nexus 1000v VSM (with the vlans mentioned before) , and this ESX is not to be managed by Nexus1000v

and migrate first one nic, then the other

when sometimes something goes wrong, I use the following KB:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101061...

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100754...

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100812...

and do not forget the port profiles for the services you wish to publish (virtual machine networks, service console, vmkernel)

I had done that actually, but no matter how many times I tried to migrate both connections over to the Nexus 1000V on the ESX host which I install the Nexus 1000V, I will get total disconnected and the VSM will disable automatically for that host.

I not sure this should be the recommended way to migrate everything to Nexus 1000V or we should remain 1 physical connection as minimal for ESX host which host the Nexus 1000V.

What do you think?

Having both connections connected to the VEM when using a CNA is a supported config. It's also supported to put a VSM on a VEM as well.

I would migrate the connections as a staged approach.

I would keep vmnic0 on vSwitch0. When you add the host to the VEM add only vmnic1.

Create port-profiles with type vethernet for all your connections on vSwitch0. This should include Service Console and VMK connections. Make sure that "system vlan xx" is defined both in the port-profile for Service Console and VMK and also on the uplink that will carry this traffic.

Migrate your VMK and SC connections to the N1KV by "managing virtual adapters" from the network tab of the ESX host. Once all the connections from vSwitch0 is migrated over you can remove vmnic0 from vSwitch0 and add it to the VEM.

The key for SC and VMK connections to the VEM is "system vlan" in the port-profile type vethernet and the uplink port-profile type ethernet.
