kernel modules not loading, vmfs filesystem wont mount

I have an odd problem with an old ESX 2.5 system. After a system crash, the system was rebooted but the vmfs filesystem with the vmdk's etc wont mount up. I have another ESX 2.5 system and I can see from lsmod that the aic7xxx scsi module and the NFS modules are not loaded. If I use insmod to load them they are listed as unused. The result of this is that I cannot "see" my external disks and therefore the area that is used to store virtual machines. Obviously they wont start.

Not sure where the problem lies. The hardware has been booted into diagnostic mode and everything checks out fine. There is nothing in the error logs to suggest a fault.

Any ideas of where to look?

      Thanks.
