Moving host/VMs from one cluster to another w/o VM interruption?

I'm currently working on consolidating some ESX servers to one, giving up a data center and cluster. Now I want move a host (member of data center A, cluster A) to be added to an existing datacenter B into cluster B with all the VMs running. Storage and network configuration are the same. Anyway, vSphere Client says that one has to put the host in maintenance mode, evacuating all the VMs before the host can be added to cluster B.

Does anyone have a work-around? Powering off the VMs/ESX is not an option.

I'm running vSphere 4 Update 1.

Thanks in advance!

is vmotion available? I think is you disable HA/DRS from cluster A you should be able to freely move the host out of the cluster -

Thanks for your answer; I figured out a solution myself:

- Disconnect host from vCenter Server w/ VMs running.

- Move it to new data center (add as stand-alone host)

- Move it to new cluster, re-configure for HA

Job done.

Wondering why VMware doesn't support this out of the box.

Regards!
