Failed attempt to migrate Win2003 to Win2008

An attempt to migrate VM from Windows 2003 R2 to 2008 SP2 fails with message

"windows installation encountered an error and cannot continue".

I looked for log files, found file seupapi.app.log, and found this regarding VMWARE SVGA II - not sure this is reason for installation failure:

>>>

>>> Section start 2009/12/08 20:45:57.609

cmd: winpeshl.exe

! dvi: Selecting driver failed(0xe0000228)

! dvi: Default installer: failed!

! dvi: Error 0xe0000228: There are no compatible drivers for this device.

<<< Section end 2009/12/08 20:45:57.625

<<<

Under same ESXi 3.5 - I run just fine a Windows 2008 (installed originally as Windows 2008)

Please comment if this driver failure-message may be a reason for installation failure, and if yes - how to solve it, thanks in advance

Try uninstalling VMware tools, reboot and then try your migration again.

VMware Tools was removed several attempts ago, that removal did not help.

Have you first tried to migrate to 2008 without R2?

I think WIN2008 R2 is 64bit only.

I operate 32bit, and try to install Win2008 SP2.

If you mean to try Win2008 GA (without SP2) - it occured to me since other VM I have and works fine was originally installed from Win2008 GA (no SP), and later it was applied maintenance. Is that your direction?

Hmmm... as far as I am aware there are no inplace upgrade paths for any windows platform from 32 bits to 64 bits.

You will have to install the 64bits OS from scratch.

As mentioned - migration to Win2008 (32 bit) image-including-SP2 failed.

In other words - migration from Win2003 using this DVD image

en_windows_server_2008_datacenter_enterprise_standard_without_hyper-v_sp2_x86_dvd_342334.iso

failed.

However - as per previous advice in this thread, migration worked fine to Win2008 (Standard, 32 bit) GA. Thanks.

The DVD image that did the migration is General Avalability (GA) without any SP:

en_windows_server_2008_datacenter_enterprise_standard_without_hyperv_x86_dvd_x14-27006.iso

Given GA installed - I will move forward to apply all Win2008 maintenance including SP2, up to latest and greatest.
