Workstation 7 installer error 1021

Hello,

Trying to install wks7 on win xp I'm hitting the "Failed to create the requested registry keyKey: InstallerError: 1021" bug.

the solution from http://communities.vmware.com/thread/229807does not apply, my computer is alredy set to EN-US and the startup parameter "-L English"does not help either.

On my computer the default user TEMP/TMP variables are set to %windir%/temp, just in case that this might matter.

Any hint?

Attached is the installer log:

create

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.

manually before launching the setup - the installer likes to mess up permissions for this key

The key is already there, and I've even gave full permission over it to "everyone", still no luck. I've also run the installer with /clean parameter, same error when I've retried to install.

Later edit: on the other hand, completly removing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc. did helped. Thank you, continuum for the hint!

try the same with

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMnetLib\VMnetConfig

ha! found the solution on my own Smiley Happy

right click the setup executable and apply the run as administrator and run as in windows xp, in compatibility tab. this is the only solution that worked for me.

good luck

I get the same error and I tried what everybody said to do but I still get the same error. It is real frustrating.

I've tried creating all keys listed in this thread and I still cannot install VM Workstation. I've tried using the local admin account, domain admin account, UAC on running as admin, UAC off, compatibility mode etc etc etc. This is a completely fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate x64 from Technet.

Any one else have an idea?

Edit: Odd, but deleting everything I find when I search the registry with the term 'VMWare' now allows me to install.

my workaround:

1.) Load the "RegScanner" tool and search for all entries with "VMware". Delete all hits.

2.) create the registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMnetLib

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMnetLib\VMnetConfig

3. start the installation, finish 😉

Thanks a lot! It works fine for me in Windows 8 Developer Preview too.

Yep, removing all references to VMware in the Win 7 registry allowed me to install VMware Workstation 8.0.
