VMotion issue

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I have a vmotion issue. I've just installed a new environment and whenever I choose to migrate a VM to another host I get the message "The virtual machine must be powered off to perform this function". Why?

I have two vSphere hosts managed by vCenter in a single cluster.

Things I've checked are:

- License : VMotion listed under "Add-on Features" on each host

- "VMotion Enabled: yes" on the summary tab of both hosts

- VMKernel Port Group created and VMotion enabled on both hosts

- Can ping both hosts VMKernel IP address from Service Console on both hosts

- Checked the VM to ensure that no devices are configured to use the host hardware (i.e. floppy & DVD)

- Verfified that Network labels on both hosts are the same

- VM is hosted on common shared storage (FC SAN)

Am running out of further ideas, so any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers, Nick.

It always says this under the 'Change both host and datastore' option.

That option is 'Storage VMotion'. The message isn't related to VMotion.

You should have the 'Change host' option available. This option is

'VMotion'. It should not have that message directly below it. You

should be able to select 'Vmotion' and select Next. Is the 'Next'

button or 'Change Host' greyed out?

Are the two hosts the same hardware model and CPU type - if not you need to check CPU compatibility

All VM disks on shared storage - as you indicated

Port Group(s) the VM connects to exist on the destination host - make

sure you've named them exactly the same on both hosts

Disconnect CD-ROM drive

Also make sure that the Vmachine is on your SAN Storage!!

OK, got to the bottom of the problem - an IP Address conflict on one of my VMKernel ports (someone's not been updating our IP address spreadsheet - I now need to hunt the culprits down and kill them :smileyangry: ).

I looked at the links that addressed the "The virtual machine must be powered off to perform this function" error and still couldn't see the solution until the penny dropped - that warning isn't warning me of anything at all! It's associated with the last option only - "Change both host and datastore" (or similar) - even though it looks like it's for the whole menu. That's terrible GUI design.

Cheers, Nick.
