How many Virtual marchine can be host?

I had a server with the following configuration, wondering how many clients marchine can i host on it. No need to take in the consideration of the disk space, space can supply via iSCSI server.

Host Server Spec:

2 x Xeon E5520

48Gb Memory

2.1Tb Local SAS Storage

ESXi 4.0

Client VM Spec:

Windows Server 2008 x64

4Gb Virtual memory

I suppose a single vCPU for each VM.

From core count you can have about 32 - 64 VM (it depends also by vCPU usage).

From RAM count you can have about 18 - 24 VM (it depends also by vRAM usage).

From storage point of view is recommended to limit the number of VMs per LUN to about 8 - 16 VMs.

If you have an existing environment you are thinking of virtualising your best bet is to do some capacity planning. Use a tool such as Novell Recon to gather data from the servers you wish to virtualise. You will then be able to create scenarios with your hardware spec to properly work out how much hardware you need to have in your vmware environment to host the servers.
