ESX 2.5.x / vCenter 2.0.2 / Cannot ping/rdp vm but it is sending/receiving packets per NIC status

2 vms on same host, same vSwitch, different portgroups/VLANs, stop responding to ping requests, cannot rdp, NIC status in guests shows incoming and outgoing traffic, no complaints from clients

vSwitch has 3 Gig pNICs and all show up - host/guests have been in production for several years

VMtools repair install and restart - no help although it did change some drivers

Rumor is that it could be legacy devices - I'm checking that this am.

Any help? Bug in ESX 2.5?

Legacy device removal no help. Anyone?

I suspect nic 3 is issue. It is bound to 2 others on "production" vSwitch. I cannot drop it from vSwitch using MUI - get "modify virtual switch: virtual ethernet switch is in use: Production".

I don't know if an ifdown command will work either ... so unplugged the #3 NIC and OK, no more issues, vms move to "good" pNICs.

I wish I knew if the ifdown/ifup command rotated through the 3 vmnics would have cleared it ... but my environment limits doing anything risky or anything buy absolutely necessary downtime.

            Wierdness:

            (1) 2 vms become unpingable, cannot RDP, but vNICs show inbound and outbound packets and the client reports apps are OK. VMs are on separate VLANs/portgroups on same vSwitch. (this resolved by physically disconnecting 3rd pNIC on vSwitch that vms were likely linked) ESX 2.5.4 and vCenter 2.0.2

            (2) I have 3 vNICs on 2 vms, one vNIC on A VLAN, two vNICs on B VLAN, I pwr dwn vms, delete the vNICs on both on A VLAN, boot them up and one A VLAN vNIC & one B VLAN vNIC remains? Why is the A VLAN NIC still there and the one B VLAN NIC gone? I deleted the vNIC that was labeled for A VLAN but a B VLAN vNIC was deleted. (had to completely wipe and reconfigure)  ESX 3.0.2 and vCenter 2.0.2

            I have witnesses. Any explanations?
