Storage vmotion between local hardisk to SAN Disk

Hi,

I have 3 ESX Vpshere 4.0 ( TEMP) with local storage each.

I purchase two more ESX Connected to a SAN Storage. A new vCenter is setup that can managed the local esx and also the newly setup ESX Connected to SAN.

Will I be able to perform a storage vmotion, taking into consideration that the (3 temp storage) have no Fibre card and will it be intelligent to copy from copy/move from local hardisk to san disk using vcenter storage vmotion?

To use SVMotion you need that the host where the VM is registered could see BOTH source and destination datatore.

If not, you can use a cold migration.

No, Storage vMotion does not copy things thru the vCenter server.

The ESX needs to be able to see both datastores to be able to do a Svmotion between them.

I would say that the best solution would be to setup a iScsi or NFS datastore, connect that to your ESX:s and do a Svmotion to them.

As long as you can see the both storage from the ESX host that is hosting the VM you can use storage VMotion to migrate the machine from Local storage to SAN. Simply go to the VM and right click and select migrate. You should select change datastore.
