Add to Inventory / Validation not applicable this time

I have a Windows 2003 server running on vCenter v2.5.0. I am able to "Remove from Inventory", but when I attempt to add it to another ESX host, I recieve the error "Validation not applicable this time". Also I am not able to create a new VM and use this existing .vmdk file, no files show up in any of the virtual machine directories.

Can someone tell me what is causing this behavior? Thanks, -Jeff

I am trying to cold migrate VM's from ESX 3.5 to 4.0. I remove from inventory on the 3.5 environment, then attempt to add to inventory from the vSphere server. I receive the error message, " Validation not applicable this time" to a new ESX host?

The CPU's, network and datastores are the same. Thanks, -Jeff

I can export the VM from the 3.5 virtual center server to the 4.0 vSphere server, but this requires rewriting to the same datastore, which is a huge waste of time when I am remaining on the same datastore. Can someone suggest an efficient procedure to move VM's from 3.5 to 4?

the problem is that the OP is using vCenter 2.5, which cannot manage the ESX4 box. Best option is to use converter.

same question asked in a different manner here

Why do you have to remove the VM from inventory? Perform cold migration to you new host using vCenter.
