Can someone please look into this
You should look at page 3 of the VMware vSphere Compatibility Matrixes ( http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf )
But in short:
vCenter Server 4.0 can manage host from 2.5 to 4.0
vCenter Server 2.5 can manage host from 2.5 to 3.5
As a general rule of thumb, older vCenter Servers can not manage newer ESX Hosts.
You have to upgrade vCenter server from 2.5 to 4 before you can add ESX/ESXi 4 hosts to it.
You can add ESX 3.5 hosts to vCenter server 4.
Th upgrade guide explains the process of upgrading vCenter server first and then upgrading all your ESX hosts via various methods depending on your setup. The guide is the best ive seen from VMware yet.
