VM display host hardware

Hi there,

I did this some time ago but cannot seem to find how to do it again.

I want VMs to display the manufacturer and/or model to be the underlying ESX host manufacturer/model, instead of the virtualised version - 'VMware, Inc.' and 'VMware Virtual Platform"

I know this is a manual edit of the .vmx file and I've had a check through sanbarrow (http://sanbarrow.com/vmx.html) but can't seem to locate this.

I use bginfo to do a wmi query which displays the manufacturer / model as part of the desktop, and would like this to be the underlying host hardware.

Cheers, (and points Smiley Wink ) in advance.

Hello,

Never heard of this being possible. Perhaps in 1.5/2.1 days but nothing in v3.x has been able to do so. Nor would you really want to as this would take a driver change within the guest OS. ANd if the Guest OS did see the underlying hardware it may load an incorrect driver as well.

Hi,

I don't think it involved anything that drastic - it was simply an additional line in the .vmx file. Certainly the guest did not go through driver detection.

This was definitely done in version 3, as the particular implementation started on 3.01 - i'm 100% sure.

Cheers
