I know this is an old post, but I couldn't find a way, as a new user, to start my own thread.
I'm having the same problem with a virtual parallel port I'm trying to create on a Win2003 guest. I'm using VMware Server 2 on a SLES host. Does anyone know how to have the question/error message answered automatically?
I'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it or not... but I managed to avoid the question/error message by deleting the output file on startup.
Is this the only way around it?

Adding these lines to the .vmx file should fix this (On ESX 4 anyway):
msg.autoAnswer = "TRUE"
msg.serial.file.open = "Append"
Other questions can be answered with msg.<question_id>=<answer>.
It's getting to be 10 years since the answer to the question but this deserves more up votes. It's really annoying how some setting adjustments for VM are needed to be done in vmx file itself.
Many thanks to epowell , that's the answer to a question OP was asking.
