Windows Server 2008 Guests not seeing each other

Hi,

This is driving me insane! Still quite new to VM's so probably a simple fault - I hope! Smiley Happy My setup and problem-

Host: Vista - connected to internet via DHCP from ISP.

First: VM: Domain controller with DNS and DHCP installed on. Windows Server 2008. 1 NIC is bridged to host and the other NIC is private on address 169.243.10.x/24 subnet. DNS is registering other Server machines and DHCP serving workstation.

Second VM: Windows Server 2003 standalone. Set on static IP 169.243.10.26/24. It CAN ping the domain controller and vice versa (doman controller can ping this server). nslookup is fine.

Third VM: Windows XP - DHCP and can ping Windows Server 2008 and vice versa. nslookup is fine.

Forth VM: Windows Server 2008 - static IP 169.243.10.29 - it CAN ping domain controller BUT domain controller cannot ping this server?? Checked and re-checked all setting seem fine - the DNS server and gateway is going to the domain controller. Nslookup is fine but it cannot resolve external addresses - since the domain controller canno see this server so does not post a reply? However, private addresses seem to go through fine.

All Guests are going through VMNet2 and aside from the two Windows Server 2008 servers all others can ping each other and see each other fine. It seems like the issue is on the domain controller since it cannot ping my other Windows Server 2008 VM - nslookup is fine though??

This is really driving me insane! Can someone please shed any light onto this.

Is a firewall active on the fourth machine?

Do you ping the IP addresses?

Hi,

Firewall is disabled on both servers and I only ping the IP addresses. I am contantly getting no reply from the domain controller to the other windows 2008 server.

I might try another vswitch tonight.

If you have cloned (by copying) your guests, check that they don't have the same MAC addresses!

Could it be the firewall on your Server 2008? I can't remember if the firewall allows incomings pings by default when the system is configured in a workgroup configuration... Although turning on file and printer sharing should then allow incoming pings, if I remember correctly.

    • oops, I see the poster has already disabled the firewall, so disregard this post ***

Not sure if it is relevant, but that Default Gateway entry of 0.0.0.0 looks strange?

Not necessearily as this connection points to the VMware isolated host-only network, there's no gateway needed and there's a gateway on the bridged connection where it makes more sense.

Windows 2008 has several firewall configurations. not just the one in the control panel.

If you go into administration tools-server manager.

expand configuration. Open windows firewall with advanced security. turn off private and public profile.
