Apple acknowledges MacBook Pro display corruption issue, will repair (NVIDIA 8600M GT hardware problem)

Hi folks,

There have been a few threads discussing display corruption on MacBook Pro systems. Some users noted they were running VMware Fusion at the time of the display corruption, but we weren't able to get to the bottom of the issue.

Apple has just acknowledged this is a hardware problem with some MacBook Pro laptops with NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics chips. They're offering to repair affected laptops:

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

If you have a MacBook Pro, and you see screen corruption like the screenshots in this thread:

then please take a picture of the problem and bring your MacBook Pro in to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider so they can fix your laptop up.
