Hello,
If your ESX version supports EVC then you can use this to vMotion. EVC will allow 5300s to vMotion to 7400s etc. Basically allow any of the modern intel processors to use vMotion without setting cpu masks.

As i understand it , the FlexMigration technology is introduced with the Xeon 7400.
That would suggest that it is only vMotion compatible with processors that have the FlexMigration technology ,wich is Xeon 7400 and above.
So the quick and easy answer would be NO.

Hi Bamse,
Thanks for your prompt reply. My understanding was that Intel FlexMigration was introduced with Intel Xeon 7300 but correct me if I am wrong.

In the keynote on VMWorld lasvegas the 7400 was pointed out as the first processor with the support for FlexMigration, i found a video from Intel´s booth in VMWorld europe saying the same.

I also found this on Intels news section.

It seams that a question needs to be sent to Intel in this mather.

Hello,
That is correct. However, if you have only 2 nodes you want to also upgrade to VC 2.5.0 Update 3 to fix an HA problem.

Yes, they are compatible under EVC. FlexMigration on 7400s (Penryns) will be configured to be compatible with 7300 (Merom). See VMware KB 1003212
