No, these OS'es do not use i386 chips, VMware is virtualisation not Emulation

The reason you do not see these operating systems on the supported guest OS list is because they do not run on an x86 platform. These operating systems run on RISC or Itanium processors. If at some point they were ported to the x86 platform we would have the ability to run them using ESX.

There is no solution for AIX yet, but you can virtualize Solaris, SPARC, HP-UX systems using 3rd party specialize in this field is www.transitive.com check out for details.

Is AIX ever likely to be virtualized? I just get the feeling that IBM will always want it running on their hardware...
Having said that and with the amount we spend on their H-Class Blade infrastructure along with P series you would hope that they may allow a couple of "Virtual" instances to be run alongside each AIX licence / hardware purchase maybe one day in the future?
