VMWare Server 2.0 RC2 on Fedora 9 X64: not able to access the infrastructue web

    wzis Novice

Error: The server is not responding. Please check that the server is running and accepting connections.

The issue seems to be with the vmware-hostd process and "service vmware restart" won't solve the problem.

Firstly welcome the the forums, however please note, this forum is for Version 1.x of VMware server, Version 2 is still in Beta, therefore I am moving your post to the correct area,  If you do not have access to the Beta Forums, you will need to register.

                I've tried to:

                1. Update the OS: yum update

                2. Remove the Server 2.0RC2

                3. Install Server 2.0RC2 again

                4. run vmware-config.pl

Though every setps completed successfully, the result still the same.

                Then I tried

                1. Remove the RC2

                2. rm -rf /etc/vmware

                3. install RC2 again.

                4. config again.

                Still the same result.

BTW, in all cases, the machine is running 2.6.26.3 I manually compiled on the machine (to get Nvidia 8600 X server working and include the atl1e driver).

I have no idea why vmnware server is not running on your machine

On mine all was ok with beta2, rc1 and now rc2

                  BTW:

You do not need to compile the nvidia-driver by your own

Intall "kmod-nvidia" and "akmod-nvidia", akmod-nvidia needs the last official kernel and kmod-nvidia and builds if compiler is installed and /tmp mounted with execute-permissions the driver while booting the machine if its needed.

harry@srv-rhsoft:~$ rpm -qa | grep nvidia

                  akmod-nvidia-173.14.12-2.lvn9.x86_64

                  xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-173.14.12-1.lvn9.x86_64

                  kmod-nvidia-173.14.12-3.lvn9.x86_64

                  kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.3-27.fc9.x86_64-173.14.12-2.fc9.x86_64

                  xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-173.14.12-1.lvn9.x86_64

                  kmod-nvidia-2.6.25.11-97.fc9.x86_64-173.14.12-2.lvn9.x86_64

                  kmod-nvidia-2.6.25.14-108.fc9.x86_64-173.14.12-3.lvn9.x86_64

Does Fedora still have the problem where the default PAM module does not allow you to log in?

I tried to complie the 2.6.26.3 with

                      make oldconfig

                      make menuconfig

and with the new kernel built, the issue is finally resovled.

The previous kernel was built without the "make oldconfig"

The VMware Server 2.0RC2 seems very sensitive to how the kernel is built. The vmware-config.pl should detect which part is missing and give an clear advise.

I know on my CentOS installation I needed to disabled IPTables and SELinux.

To disable IPTables just for the current running system:

                          /etc/init.d/iptables stop

and if you want to disabled it from starting up:

                          chkconfig iptables off

To disable SELinux you must edit this file and change it to disabled:

                          /etc/sysconfig/selinux
