I also encountered an error when updating the VMware Tools on a WinXP X-64 VM running on a Redhat 126.96.36.199-rt host. The error was
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WyseMMRFFilter.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024770
I have exactely the same VMware-Tools upgrade problem. Guest is Windows XP, host - Redhat EL 5.2.
The only workaround i found to install the current version of the Tools, was to deinstall the old version manually.
Then, after reboot, i had to mount the Tool image by hand. Now the installation ran smoothly.
Guest is Windows XP SP2, host OpenSUSE 11
i have the same problem after upgrade to RC2. I test
uninstall the vmware-tools on the guest, but the new installation fails without comment.
Host is Ubuntu Hardy (8.04), Guest is Windows 2000 SP4.
I mount the ISO - Image "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso" manually. The Autostart start the setup.exe and this is again fails. Then i use "VMware Tools.msi" and that works perfectly.
I also got the error 2704 and found 2 old versions of VMware Tools installed in the client (W2K). After de-installing them manually with control panel -> software I was able to install the new version without problems.
