Add floppy under removables

When I attempt to apply 'Connected' floppy under Settings, I get message 'The filename cannot be empty if "Use floppy image" is selected."'

Why must I have an image? I want to give the VM access to the device without having to create an image of the data.

If you had read the documentation you would know that VMware Fusion supports only floppy image files for use with a virtual floppy device.

VMware Fusion menu > Help > VMware Fusion Help > Managing Virtual Machines > Configuring a Floppy Device

Then what don't you understand? Your only choice it to use a floppy image file as the Floppy Device.

According to Knowledge Base ID 1003422,

it is just 'Add, then OK'.

There is no hassle of a Floppy Image.

I think KB 1003422 should say to use the .flp image (be sure to unzip it) you downloaded in step 1.

It is auto-magically unzipped when download completes.

I believe that a reference the KnowledgeBase Id 1002195

would be helpful to any other new-kid-on-the-block.

That tidbit should be mentioned in the help flies.
