What is your guest OS?
Is your guest VMware Hardware set to 6?
Please attach/post "vmware.log" file from guest directory on your physical host.
My guest OS is Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. My VMware hardware is set to 7. I have also added the following line to my /etc/fstab:
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0
Without this line VMware would not reconize ipod at all.
Here the output from vmware.log seen when connecting my ipod:

Anybody else having this problem?
I'm having similar problems with RC1 on an ubuntu 8.04.1 host/ win2ksp4 and winxp pro guests.
I've compared to a vmware server 1.0.6 installation running an xp pro guest and am able ot successfully use the same usb device there.
It connects (or appears to) for a moment and then reports....
Remote USB device error: Remote device disconnected: an error occured while receiving data.
I have same problem. SuSE 10.3 (64-bit) host (vmware server 2.0 rc1). Windows XP (32-bit) guest. Seems no USB device can be connected to guest. Guest hardware is set to version 7.
Exact same issue here running on Fedora 9 with VMware-server.x86_64 2.0.0-101586
same problem here. host: ubuntu 8.04 guest: winxp sp3
server 1 didn't work for me due to lack of usb2.0 support. it took me 3 hours to get the usb device actually listed (problem with linux), but now this...
i'm trying to use my iphone
man i really hope this gets fixed soon. i'd love to load some music on this phone.
I am seeing the same problem on Ubuntu Intrepid.
My virtual machine version is 7
I am connecting to a Texas Instruments Fusion Digital Power Designer
The symptoms are the same, it appears to connect then reports back: Remote USB device error: Remote device disconnected: an error occured while sending data.
I'm having exactly the same problem. Server 2.0 RC2 running on Ubuntu Desktop 8.04 64bit. 32bit XP Pro guest cannot connect to USB printers or disk.
I'm having a hard time believing there's not a solution to this.
Maybe they only care about paying customers (the ones who got floored by the magic licence expiry bug) ?
There doesn't seem to be a proper bug reporting method...

Unfortunately, the phrase "Workstation addresses this issue" tells us nothing. Perhaps
a link to a document that actually explains how it does this might help.
All I can tell you is that I used vmware workstation and the majority of my iphone problems were gone. I'm sorry I can't provide technical information.
