a general system error occured: Internal error

I am getting the following error when I power on my VMs.

"a general system error occured: Internal error".

My system is installed with ESX 3.5 and VMs with Windows 2003 EE. This pops up when I click on the Poweron button of each VMs. Any idea on what could be the problem?

Thanks!

Post your vmware.log. Are you running a 64-bit vm, but using 32-bit as your os selection?

I am seeing the same thing with all of my virtual machines, regardless of operating system. They all booted fine previously. ESX 3.5 U1. I have also confirmed licensing and that ntp is correctly setting date/time.

Hi,

maybe VC is stumbled (again).

Either connect with the VIC direct to you ESX server or use the service console.

/usr/bin/vmware-cmd start

This will usually start your VM without an problem or will return an error code for analysis.

Hope this helps a bit

I have the same problem. My running VM's are working fine, but as soon as I power them off or initiate a migration, I get the following error: "a general system error occurred: internal error"

If I try to run

# vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/VMware_LUN0/infraftp/infraftp.vmx start

I get the following result:

VMControl error -999: Unknown error: The poweron operation failed unexpectedly.

Any ideas ?

Hi,

do you have ESX 3.5 Update2 installed? If yes, take a look here:

There's a bug in ESX preventing power on vms....

Christian,

Thanks for that. That was the case. Now let's hope the VMware developers work 24/7 to fix it
