Problem installing VMWare server under Unbuntu 8.04

    IanHobson Novice

      Hi,

I am trying to install VMWare server under Unbuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron, following the instructions I found at

      http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_feisty_fawn_vmware_server_howto

The any-any download I used was version 115

When it came to run the configuration script, it collapsed with this

      Building the vmmon module.

      Building for VMware Server 1.0.0.

      Using 2.6.x kernel build system.

      make: *** http://vmmon.ko Error 2

      make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config1/vmmon-only'

Unable to build the vmmon module.

For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please

visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and

      Execution aborted.

Now I am right out of my depth (and new to Linux). How do I solve this?

(At this early stage, stepping back to 7.10 is a possibility).

      Thanks

      Ian

Here's a mini-howto for 8.04, rather than the 7.x you were using.  I haven't tried these directions yet, I'm planning on doing the install sometime in the next couple of weeks.

            HI,

Thanks for your reply - I was not aware of the later files.

By using the any-any-update117a I was able to complete the install. However...

Now when I start VMWare Server Console the task appeasr in the task bar for 5 seconds and vanishes without giving an error message!

Does anyone know where the log fiels are so I can find out why?

            Regards

open a terminal window, and type "vmware-server-console" at the command line. you'll get some output on why the console won't launch. Reply with the info.

If the output looks like this:

              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc+.so.6)
              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc
              .so.6)
              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
              /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc
              +.so.6)

Then, you'll want to do the following from the commandline:

              cd /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1

              mv libgcc_s.so.1 libgcc_s.so.1.org

              cd ../libpng12.so.0

              mv libpng12.so.0 libpng12.so.0.org

                The result was

                bash: vmware-server-console: command not found

                Did I spell it right?

I hadn't read the instructions properlyand missed the last step!

                  sudo cp /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1

The server is now creating my first disk

                  Thanks everyone for your help.
