    ESX Internals Class

    Ken.Cline Champion

OK, here's what I'd like to see:

A new class offering that covers, in detail, the inner workings of ESX.

        - the bootup process,

        - the various helper VMs,

        - the scheduler,

        - performance tuning - what works, what doesn't,

        - networking,

        - storage,

        - what happens when you start a VM,

        - what happens when you kill a VM,

        - what processes do what to whom,

        - Come on folks - add to the list!

I see this as being a 3-5 day class taught by senior VMware staff. Class sizes should be kept small to maximize student/teacher interaction. Because of the relatively small number of people that will be able to benefit from this class (it's not something for the uninitiated!), it would likely be offered only two to four times a year. Due to the nature of the content and the skill level required of the instructor, I would also expect that this class would be priced at a premium over the "Admin I/Admin II" classes.

This class could also be used as a means to recognize a "Senior VCP" or something - but only if there is a pass/fail metric. Just paying the $$ and attending is not good enough to receive elevated status.

      Anyone else out there interested?

Scott and I were acctually talking about getting some more detailed info and doing an ESX class. Kinda "the non-official" training for Vmware. Then Mayne if there is an audience, do an andvanced class. Not sure if there is a market for it yet or not.

But guys like Ken, Well they gotta get with the level 3 engineers and will still probably school them

Sounds good ken.  Add to that list:

              SCSI status code deciphering

              Network Sniffing

              VM load testing

              VM debugging

              Hardcore ESX Recovery

IMHO, if this goes through, you should not be certified by doing well in the class.  There should be a RHCE style (hands-on) exam lab.  You will then become a VCP+E (VCP Elite or something).

Ron and Scott.  You know I'm down, just let me know.

Other recommended instructors Jmills and Lance Berc.

I did hear they are working on a advanced esx class...

Probably not the absolute indepth you guys are wanting.. but it is a start..

I also would really like to see this.  The Level II Advanced course looked like the one I wanted to go to until I found out it had been consolidated into a more simplified course covering how to install how to create a VM etc...  I think the big thing that VMware should do that would clear up a lot of problems for people would be to break down the scheduler this for me would explain alot about the performance issues we all have seen.

                  \- Scheduler

                  \- VMKernel Log Troubleshooting

\- Design and Planning of Large Infrastructures Using VMware

                  \- SAN Optimization

Forgot to add that I would also like a breakdown off the new directories in /PROC filesystem.

Especially cover the /proc/vmware/loglevels which looks like it would increase logging levels but doesn't appear to do anything just yet...  If VMware could pattern its documentation after the Mainframe OS390 type documents / manuals that would be excellent...

You know what might be interesting is an advanced class with a hands on test.  They give you the task and you have to put it together in the lab.

Could we write the Virtual Mythical Man Month?

(yes, OS/360 not OS/390, but you get the gist)

Massimo, will we owe you virtual royalties?

Since Ron makes sure I have soooooo much free time available ;-)...  And yes, there are quite a few guys who can play "Stump the chump" with high-level VMware trainers that are available to partners and customers.

Mostafa, Jason and Lance would get my vote as to those who could truly show us "experts" some things (I've heard horror stories of Mostafa's internal training, and I want some of it)  :-D
