VM install and default disk mode

When I install VMs here at my work all VMs are created with the disk mode set to persistent by default. However, I installed a VM on a ESX Foundation server and the disk mode did not default to persistent. It created it non-persistent and the ESX eventually ran out of disk space. Is the default different on the two versions? Is there a setting I am missing somewhere that sets the default to persistent on my hosts here at work?
