High CPU and memory utilization - Memory leak?

    achiniqu Lurker

I'm running Server 2.0 Beta 2 on a linux host running RHEL 5 update 1 on x86_64. I have created one vm running Windows XP and configure the vm to use ONLY 256MB ram. Once the vm is started, server memory utilization goes through the roof on the host OS. Is anyone else seeing this? Is this possibly a memory leak?  It's hard to believe that the overhead for a single vm instance should  be 5 times it's configured memory in terms of physical memory. Is this perhaps a side effect of the debug build?

How do you measure your memory usage?

Could you post the output of the following commands:

          ps ax|grep vmware-vmx free -m

Yes it looks to be a massive memory leak..

Not at all. You have 7342MB ram available to the system.

You have to explain that to me, Lars. It says total 7874 and used 7831.

Most operating systems are working like this: Unused memory is regarded as wasted memory and the OS will try to use available memory for the buffer cache. The buffer cache will however only be using memory that is available. If an application needs more memory, the buffer cache will be freed so that the application gets the amount of memory it requests. This memory will still be seen as Used in free[/i], but this memory is still available to your applications if they need it.

A system will large file activity will grow the buffer cache much mre quickly than a system with low activity. The buffer cache makes the system perform better as ram is faster than disk.

Ok, I see. Thought it had something to do with the cache. That also explains why the hosts memory seems to get eaten up, although the VMs do not have the same amount of memory allocated. It is actually not used, but in the buffercache.

Actually, yes. That message was the last thing I wrote before I got picked up
