Folks,

Anyone know would be a decent salary package for Sr. VMware Consultant for large financial corporation be? This would be consulting for other head hunter company. Any ideas would be great!

The going rate for a VMware specialist seems to be around $50/hr in my area. A decent salary package would put it at around $120k/yr with benefits and included bonus. I live in a small market though. If you were to be consulting in the valley I would suggest closer to $200k/yr

I'm consulting in Florida areas and about to switch to Financial Sector soon. I have the flexible to travel when requires but would likely be one person job type. I will be architect, implement and support whole cycle of implementations.

I have several options to work from neither Tallahassee, Orlando or Tampa.

Where do you live Dominic? I would prefer sign on bonus or performance bonus because I'm making $112K/year now which is so relax environment and work 4 x 10 hours weekly and 3 days off. It would be interesting if anyone has any input on consulting rate!

If I was you, you should break it down by the separate "hats" you would wear. Not every company would want you to do it from scratch. Certain companies may want a "vmware designer" which would fall under the Architect category. Let's say they have it designed already "in their heads, other consulting company", now they want you to implement it, then you would be the "engineer". Now they have vmware already in place, then you can charge them 75/hr (if it's your own project) or 110/hr (if it's another company's already implemented project). The rates are samples. I would recommend going thru dice.com for your zip code area to find ranges to properly price yourself.

Example:

Architect - 150/hr

Engineer - 85/hr

Support - 75/hr. (project completed by you)

110/hr (project completed by others)

Here's my scenario though...I'll be working for VMware Premier Partner & VAC company nationwide. I was hired to handle architecture, planning and implementation strictly ESX environment from new project to existing project. Basically will have to make sure project done smoothly! I would love to make that amount of money as you specified but sounds tougher lucky enough just to get pay $60/hour since this is full time status with them! Thanks for the replied aguacero!

Frankly speaking, if I'm not going to get marry soon I would hit New York & New Jersey just for short term consulting from 3-6 weeks project. They paid mad money about $40K for 4 weeks. I just think long term employment and less traveling as possible once you engaged with marriage stuff.

Yeah I could you make tons of money if someone expect you to fix their problems right away especially large organization. Sounds like you're in good shape! Are you independent consultant or working for someone else ? Hook me up !

I do this full-time... lol. To answer the OPs question, I work in the pacific northwest. I manage a large environment that was largely unmanaged before I got here. Almost a year later and I've finally got most of it under control. Still working out a few problems but most systems are clustered now and have vmotion available. I'm sitting on my hands now waiting for VMware to fix that bug with Storage VMotion.

Same here, Now working full time with 5th largest financial institution in the world. Implemented one of the largest ESX environments in 7 different countries and before this great career move I worked for (cunsulted) Misubishi Bank and implemented ESX accross 17 country's. These are now and were very large engagements and happy to have that in my back pocket. Now I'm Senior ESX Engineer working full time and no longer consulting. Done with the flying around cause married with kids.

If I were offered $40k for 4 weeks, I would use most of my vacation and get a second job for a few weeks 😃

I too am married and unable to travel much. Don't sell yourself short, virtualization is a hot skill right now. I get job offers almost daily that would almost certainly pay more than what I make now, but they would require travel and/or relocation. It sounds like you might have the freedom to move about the country.

I've also consulted for large financial corporation specialize in 2/3 of the globe credit card processing. We have huge ESX farms with 17 data centers worldwide with approximately 30,000 servers! Fly too much for consulting even though high pays but family is the key. I've realized settled with family and stay besides them is the happiness moment of my life. Seems like everybody starts settle down with relax and reliable paying jobs now! I suppose I'll stay with where I'm at now with government agency than. Environment here is flexible and relaxing

BTW, wouldn't it be awesome if 10 of us VCP here can form an alliance and have a consulting firm specifically for ESX solution! Imagine how much $$$ we gonna make hehee just kidding.

The idea is simple because most IT consulting firm (head hunters) are doing the same thing by recruiting all kinds of engineers around the nation and work for them remotely or traveling. Instead of hiring web developers virtually code and design online projects as freelancer. We can have ESX Engineers (VCP) scatter all around the nations and just be part of "Our Company" and will perform projects when requires like freelancer in a sense.

We can build huge VCP alliance and consulting groups which is independent from anyone and will only perform projects when you're desire. If anyone interested contact me for further details.

Well it look like we have a good Idea ready to work with good people ready to make extra money. We will keep this thread going and start putting some ideas and plans together. Buy the way, we are going to have to come up with a VERY GOOD BUSINESS NAME to represtent us. Lets start with that for now. Lets see what we can come up with. My first idea of a Business name is "VM Enterprise"
