I am coming from a HP MSA1000 cluster environment, here I have 2 hosts connected to MSA 1000, Both servers can access the same volume(disks). So its easy to do maintenance on one(just fail over to spare host)
The vmware environment consists of two hosts running esx 3.5 server and Virtual centre 2.5. I have 1.8 TB of EMC san disks attached to one host. Licenses for DRS, HA and so on. I created a cluster with both hosts joined.
My question is: How do I configure host 2 to see the 1.8 TB of data on host 1, or is this not possible?
This is certainly possible. You (or your storage administrator) must make sure that the disks are presented to the same LUN addresses for both hosts. Otherwise, the second host will not mount the VMFS as it does know whether this is the original volume are a snapshot.
You could change a parameter in ESX to tell it to ignore verifying the LUN address, but then you must never present any snapshots to the same host.
ok,
So, I will get the SAN guy to present the the disks to both hosts.
Will everything work,
or should I do the second bit of your answer too (where I chance a setting )?
If the SAN guy does present the disks correctly, it will work. Just do one or two 'rescans' on your second host.
The parameter change should only be done if there is no other way. It should not be used to work around an improper configuration.
thanks, will do that.
All singing and dancing thanks.
