Bridge connection doesn’t work while NAT does. Guest OS cannot obtain IP.

I search forum, found numerous reports and some proposed solutions however no working one.

While trying connecting on Workstation 6 from guest OS, Bridged connection doesn’t work while NAT does. I’m using wireless connection (Intel 4956 – new NIC in mail) on host OS.

I watched traffic with sniffer from guest OS, it seems as guest is not able to obtain IP (no single ARP packet back from host, even some talk over netbios):

1) While going to preferences of both VMnet1 and VMnet8 “VMware bridge protocol” was disabled (unchecked) – checked manual both. In all NICs of concern shares are enabled (not sure does it matter)

2) In all NICs of concerns connection is set in properties to “obtain IP automatically” _ which I guess stands for DHCP enabled.

3) I am able to ping both VMent1 and 8 from host but not able to ping host from guest

4) Firewall is disabled on both host and guest

5) On installed Paralleles Virtual Machine bridge connection works just fine.

Any suggestions?

Which VMnet do you use in guest? Virtual NIC bridged to VMnet0?

Do you have "Automatic bridging" disabled in VMware "Virtual Network Settings"?

Is your host Wireless NIC assigned to VMnet0 in "Virtual Network Settings"?

Q: Which VMnet do you use in guest? Virtual NIC bridged to VMnet0?

A: Actually guest shows “Local Are Network” as only NIC. Vmnet0 is bridget to “automatically chosen adapter”.

Q:Do you have "Automatic bridging" disabled in VMware "Virtual Network Settings"?

No! It is set to automatic, even I found those options only now. I though reply which I read (using search) before, applied only to VMware server and Workstation simply doesn’t have it (examining it for a first time as I writing reply).

Q: Is your host Wireless NIC assigned to VMnet0 in "Virtual Network Settings"?

My wireless NIC is not listed at all in Virtual Netwrk settings on ant tab I can find (still examining it)

Update:

I turned off VM and in Edit >> Virtual Network Setting >> automatic Bridging - added my Wireless NIC.

Summary shows:

VMnet0 – automatic

VMnet1 – private network with host

VMnet8 – used to share IP

Did ipconfig release and renew – still same.

Since I just discovered those options, I will try to search forum and use help files. Really hate bothering with questions more than I have to. Thanks a lot Peter! Will add new post if I can’t still figure it out.

If you check on host, Wireless NIC properties, do you see VMware Bridge Protocol (in the same window as Internet Protocol (TCP/IP))?

If you do, check its properties (VMnet number assigned to it).

Actually “property” button is grayed in Wireless NIC >> Properties >> VMware Bridge protocol,

Anyway by going to VMware >> Edit >> Virtual Networks Settings >> Host Virtual Network Mapping , and assigning manually to VMnet0 my wireless NIC with drop down arrow did the job.

Thanks a lot Peter!
