Upgrade to 6.0.1 from 6.0.0 and subsequesnt upgrade of VMTools causes strange mouse behavior

I just upgraded from Workstation 6.0.0 to 6.0.1 with the new VMWare Tools. Everything was working fine before the upgrade, but now, when I have the tools installed my mouse does not seem to be tracking properly. When I click on an object to select it, it won't select. When I click on an empty space on the guest desktop, it will open the Start Menu. Any thoughts?

Host: Windows Vista Business 32-bit

Guest: Windows XP SP2 with all latest patches

Not sure where to put this, but it belongs in the context of a previous post rather than a new one.

While troubleshooting other software problems not related to VMware Workstation 6.0.2 (i.e. Dell Mobile Broadband Client Utility under Windows Vista Enterprise on Dell D830 AND Microsoft patch install problem (0x80004005 / 0x80004002 from netcfg -e -c p -i ms_tcpip which was from the protocols "disappearing" from the NIC configurations http://but TCP/IP was working... Vista must be very resilient...) I uninstalled VMware Workstation (trust me, it was out of a last resort).

After uninstall and re-installing VMware Workstation 6.0.2, the mouse tracking stopped working. It was working since the laptop was built up from Windows Vista Enterprise. The behavior was similar to the original post on this thread, where the mouse pointer tracker to mouse movements, but the Click locations where offset -- implying the display location <> the mouse driver's location. Very weird. Tried all combinations of uninstalls of: VMware Workstation, display drivers (nVidia 140M) and trackpoint drivers from Dell. No joy.

Uninstalling VMware Tools from the Guest generally allow the clicks and mouse tracking to re-align, but mouse movements along the edge of the Guest console window would be handled by both Host and Guest. This made using the Start button on Windows operating systems very interesting. It was better but still broken.

It was also clear this was NOT a VMware Tools problem, but a general VMware system problem and its interaction with the Host O/S's display and / or mouse drivers.

I did figure it out. The answer was to stop using Vista Aero on the Vista Enterprise (32-bit) host operating system. Immediately and without reboot, the mouse function was corrected and life is good again. The weird part was that it HAD BEEN WORKING until the re-install mumbo-jumbo started.

Hi

I am having the exact problem you describe on an hp laptop, but this is with vista ultimate(brand new install) and vmware workstation 6.02(new install). I really don't want to stop using aero though. I did get the mouse to start tracking properly in the vm by reverting to the standard ms mouse driver in the vm. But, like you describe, when the mouse gets close to the edge of the vm window, I have two mouse pointers, one inside and one outside the vm, and sometimes it takes a lot of "jerking" to get the mouse pointer in the vm away from the edge of the window. Wait for a patch?

Cheers

I experienced the same problem. It seems to be related the VMware mouse driver's "wheel detection". It went away when I disabled "Wheel Detection" in the VMware mouse device.

You can disable it from DEVMGMT.MSC - expand "Mice and other Pointing Devices" and open the "VMware Pointing Device". In "Advanced Settings" disable "Wheel Detection".

I restarted and all was smooth again (without a working wheel, of course). FYI. I am using Vmware Workstation 6.0.2.

I had a similar issue with a Fedora 8 host, running a Fedora 9 alpha guest with tools installed {server-1.0.4}.

The mouse had been OK until some kernel and xorg-x11 updates. Afterwards mouse pointer would move in same direction as the mouse but the highlighted part was 40-200 mm out. Solution was to {on the guest}:

- start a terminal

- telinit 3

- mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.older

- telinit 5

FWIW, I had some of these same problems (mouse not tracking/clicking correctly, mouse jumping near the edge of the screen) on my Vista Professional 32-bit virtual machine. My virtual machine was originally in Virtual PC, and I converted it using the VMWare Converter, but I had NOT un-installed the Virtual PC Additions before conversion. Earlier today, I went back to my original Vitual PC machine, uninstalled the additions, converted, and everything worked perfectly.

After spending a full day on this here is something I hope someone finds usful and saves them the pain Smiley Wink

Converting Virtual Server images to VMWare mouse problems solved:

If you don't want to have to reconvert your machine, simply remove the old mouse driver from the mouse device class:

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue, then reboot.

No need to even uninstall the VMWare tools drivers beforehand.
