VMware Tools DNS name missing domain name for host. instead of host.domain

I am running VMware ESX Server 3.0.0 with Virtual Instrastructure Client 2.0.1. I installed VMware tools on both a dynamic IP Windows 2003 server and a static IP Windows 2003 server. Attached file windows_dynamicip.jpg shows the dynamic IP Windows 2003 server with DNS name of twin2003.test.ibm.com. Attached file windows_staticip.jpg shows DNS name of ttpmfosd.. Where does VMware tools obtain the domain name so that the DNS name could be ttpmfosd.test.ibm.com instead of ttpmfosd. ?

It pulls the Primary DNS Suffix from the OS of the computer through VMware Tools. Type IPCONFIG /ALL and see if you have a primary DNS suffix set. Are these computers part of an AD domain? The primary DNS suffix is normally the name of the AD domain that the server is part of. If it is part of a workgroup it will normally not have one set. You can set it by right-clicking on My Computer, select Properties. Then click on the Computer Name field, click Change and then click the More button. You will then see the Primary DNS Suffix field which you can set. When you join an AD domain this is normally set automatically.

The DNS name seems to origin from the computer properties dialog, where you configure the name and domain/workgroup. It seems that your server doesn't belong to a domain.
