The maximum (supported) VMDK size is 950GB.

The 950GB limit is for both Virtual IDE and Virtual SCSI disks in VMware Server
Some guys in this forum may say that the 950Gb are an artificial limit.
That may be true - but it also is a healthy limit.
If you use larger disks you have to expect strange effects - like disks that can't be formatted and things like that ...
Don't listen to those guys
--Hey Ulli, can you come up with a self-contained Win-script that creates 4096MB split-files for Huge vmware disks? If so, I blv I can adapt it 4 Linux.
Dave - I had no problems with them - that doesn't mean there are none.
Before you publish any scripts make sure you run extensive tests first.
But it is really trivial.
Just create a
and exchange the single extends with larger ones - you can use whatever size you want: I used CD-size, 1.5Gb to make 3 of them fit into a DVD, 4 Gb chunks , 8 Gb chunks as well as 950 Gb chunks.
According to Petr other split sizes should be no problem
What could be a problem and definitely needs thorough testing are disks greater 950GB.
I think we should discuss this in the upcoming Hacker's Bar.
Na, na, na... I'm lookg for a script that creates the stub 4GB "contig" files w/o extra end-user effort. U have?
--Nobody has the freespace to do those, so I'm not worried about them. Anything THAT big arguably shouldn't be a VM.
--Start w/ 4096MB split 950 (or under -- 200GB should be easily doable with 1 external drive), test those thoroughly; then we can concentrate on the completely non-supported stuff.

You can easily do it in Perl or use dd.
Create a file, open it and seek to the appropriate position, write a 0x00 byte - voila.
// Taps foot impatiently
// Holds breath
/// Turns $blue
--That doesn't help my Q: SHOW ME THE CODE pls...
dd has a really nice man page
I'll PM you some code tomorrow.
Dave - do you need the math for disk geometry ?
Remind me - I can look it up
I'm using VMWare Server 1.0.10,
The 950GB limit is only a UI limit, and I have no problem staring a machine with 2000GB SCSI disk.
As a matter of fact, VMware Converter 5.0 created this machine (target selected was VMWare Server 1).
