vmotion addressing

Hello all,

Should vmotion network be routable?  In other words, should i advertise the network in the router?

Since it is moving vm between esxi hosts, there is no need for routing. Right? If so, i can use any private address range and do not advertise it.  Correct?

What do you recommend - routable vs non routable?

The issue prior to vSphere 6 was that routed vMotion required a Request for Product Qualification (RPQ, sometimes referred to as an RFQ) by VMware engineering.

Given the choice of leaf/spine with L2 termination at the cabinet, and the use of vSphere 6, I would use a routed topology with L3 ECMP. It offers a vastly more bandwidth without having to use tricks to bond links together at L2 such as vPC. The reality is that most folks are not at this point yet, and terminate L2 at the distro/aggregation layer, or use a blade architecture where L3 is north of the blade fabric (such as UCS).
