vSwitch port groups and VM traffic

This is probably a basic question but I need to confirm because it's one fact that's proven very difficult to confirm in the documentation.  There are two VMs located within the same port group with VLAN tagging on the vSwitch.  If a VM is talking to its neighbor within the same host/port group, does the traffic traverse out the vmnic and back into the same port group?  Or, does the vm traffic simply stay within the same port group?

The Network traffic won't go out through the vmnic.

That's the beauty of it, all the traffic will be handle by the VMKernel of your host.
