vSphere 5 switch

Hi, we require some visability on what each VM is doing over the wire.

Question: Does vSphere 5 vSwitch have an IOS type system we can pull the stats out from to a collector or do we need to purchase a 1000v or something along those lines?

Currently on vSphere 4.1 with an 8GB channel to each host. Have no idea what VM's are chewing up network resource.

Cheers for your help,

Brendan

Hi,

Your best bet is to mark a port group as promiscuous, and run a wireshark server.

Out of the box, there's nothing like IOS on vSphere.

Running Promiscous Mode could be very helpful to troubleshoot guest networking issues, but if you have problems with overloaded outgoing nics then delivering all that traffic up to a single VM for analyze might be a bit too much.

I would recommend using ESXTOP on the host shell, going into the "n" mode for networking view and watch the screen while the network is under use. You will be able to see the traffic in and out from the different VMs quite clear.
