remote (outside lan) vsphere connection to ESXi

hi guys,

my first post. been reading a lot and really like this resource.

my question is how can i connect to my ESXi server with vSphere when i'm outside of my local network? im assuming i need a static ip or a static dns service and a certain port forwarded??

any help would be greatly appreciated. and hopefully i'll be able to provide help soon

Yes you will have to forward a port - the ports you need to open up are listed here on page 184 of http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_3_server_config.pdf

IMHO I suggest, for security reason, to do not open firewall port (or open ONLY for some external static IPs), but use instead a VPN solution.

For management it's just 443, 902 and 903 (TCP)

It works perfect, but as the others say, use a VPN.

Dont want a hacker taking over your ESX

Would it be OK to host the VPN software on the same box i'll be remoting into?

Also anyone have a good easy software solution recommendation for this?

OR would it be OK to have a VM that just has remote desktop, and that VM has Vsphere hosted on it.

Would that be secure? Using Microsoft Remote Desktop client or similar?
