Hello,
I am really new to this.
I have a number of virtual machines, most use networking vsphere distributed switch(dvMainSwitch). One of my virtual machines is only has standard switch options(VM network)?
How do I move the virtual machine back to the distributed switch? Its not available in drop down box for networking?
This virtual machine was on the dvportgroup yesterday, I was trying to fix the network on the machine, and chose "VM network" option for testing. After this the machine removed the option for "dvPortGroup" from network options
.
Please help.
Thanks,
jb
I think I see my problem.
I have two nics:
vmnic1 -> vSwitch0
vmnic0 -> dvMainSwitch
The virtual machine which has problems is using "vmnic1". I assume I have to delete the network interfaces on the virtual machine, add new ones, and make sure they are "vmnic0" ?
Any thoughts,
Thanks,
jb
Still having problems.
Currently my virtual machine has two network cards, they associated with "vmnic1 and vSwitch0".
How do I associate virtual machine with "vmnic0" ? I do see any options to do this? vmnic0 is on drMainSwitch, which is what I need.
When I remove or add network cards to my virtual machine, there is no option to assoicate with vmnic0(dvSwitch),
Thanks,
jb
Hi,
Did you try using the wizard?

I tried your llink.
But I must be missing something.
I use vsphere client. I don't see:
step 1 Go to the Summary page of the dvSwitch.
step 2 Click Migrate Virtual Machine Networking.
Under Inventory, I only see virtual machines. I do not see virtual switch.
What I do see through vsphere client see attached jpeg.
In the jpeg is my screen shot, I see options to migrate. I am assuming I am missing something critical. A tool or management interface.
Let me know if the screen shot help you understand my problem.
thanks,
jb
Summary tab is the second one. You are seeing the "configuration" tab.

SOrry I was showing the screen shots of what I see.
Here is my summary screen shot.
From this screen shot you can see there is no option to "migrate".
I assume this is because the inventory view I am showing you is for my esxi machine. I do not have a virtual switch under my inventory.
Sorry for confusion, I am not sure if I am being very clear.
thanks,
jb
No worries, I think you are being clear
I don't have access right now to my vCenter so I'm struggling with my memory right now ![]()
Try to change the Inventory view from "Hosts and Clusters" to Networking.
I also belive that you can't manage a dvSwitch connectes directly to an ESXi but you will need to connect to a vCenter...at least I never managed a dvSwitch from outside my vCenter.

Try clicking on "inventory" and select networking, so it will say Home>Inventory>Networking
That shoudl give you a tree view of datacenters and the distributed switches in them. You can then click on the distributed switch in the tree, and click on the configuratoin tab. You should be able to use the manage hosts wizard to migrate virtual machines between the standard and distributed switch.
Are there other VMs on the same host as this one that are working properly? It almost sounds like this VM might be on a host that isn't part of the dVS. You can check from "hosts" tab for the dVS from the networking pane.
See my attached inventory view. I have no network options. Once I click inventory, it takes me to previous screen shots. Which show my ESXi host and vm's.
VM's networking are working fine. The vm's networking on the "vSwitch0" and "dvMainSwitch" are working.
If you see my previous screen shots I have:
vcenter server 01 -> dvMainSwitch
vCloudDirector -> vswitch0
Both currently work, but I had "vCloudDirector" on dvMainswitch before. I want to get it back on it.
I don't understand how to get "hosts" tab from dvs? I guess this is because I don't networking in my inventory?
thanks,
jerry
Hi,
I wouldn't know how to manage a dVS directly from an ESXi host, sorry... I also belive it's not possible but, maybe someone else knows how to do it, posts it here and then we both learn something new ![]()
As far as I understand, dVS "lives" in the vCenter Database and is managed thru vCenter (where the management plane lives). Hosts only have the data plane. So, networking works even when vCenter is down (data plane on hosts) but you won't be able to manage it (management plane on vCenter).

Jerry, quick question.
Are you connecting to the vcenter, or the host? You need to connect to vcenter to have the networking tab and manage the distributed switch.
Thanks you. Yes you were correct. My problem was I was trying to make changes through vsphere client. Vcenter was the solution. It allowed me to change my networking settings, move my vm to the dvMainSwitch.
Thanks again.

You are welcome Jerry!
Glad it works now ![]()
