What is the recommended vNic to use for a 10GB network?

Jump to solution

We are on vCenter and ESXi version 5.1 and implementing some new hosts on our new 10GB network.  I've noticed that when using the default e1000 vNic on a VM, the speed only registers as 1GB.  When using VMXNET3, it registers correctly as 10GB.  But I've read elsewhere that VMXNET3 is experimental.  Is there a best practice or recommendation of which type to use for virtual machines on a 10GB network?

The VMXNET3 is not experimental, it is has been around since version 4.0 from 2009 or something and is typically recommended for all machines where you want to optimize the networking performance.
