VM internal connection using only VNICS

We have around four production machines(physical) that are on a specific sub-net defined with a static IP address(private). They all communicate with each other to process data. Though its possible, but they do not connect to the internet. We are in the process of creating a Virtual test environment for all the four these production machines. We were able to successfully virtualize all four of them. We are using VMsphere ESXI 4.2.  All four production machine have lots of configuration defined based on their host name, and IP addresses. We do not want to change any of the current configurations for any machine. The issue is that if we turn on the four VM's they will conflict with the production machines since they have the same name and IP addresses. We do not want this to happen.

Here is what we think could be a solution. We create a new Virtual Switch with a new port-group name. We connect all the four VM's to the new Virtual switch, but we do not assigned any uplink to the Virtual switch. We assume this will keep the four VM's isolated from outside network and the VM's can talk to each other. Please assist if you think this could be a solution or please suggest any tips....Thanks....

That should work as long as they all stay on the same ESX host. If they need to be spread out among several ESX hosts then you will need to create a separate VLAN for this environment on your physical switches and connect it to the new vswitch.
