Two vSwitch or Two Port Group

Hi,

I have a question. I want to know when we should use one vSwitch with 2 portgroup and when we should use 2 vSwitch with one portgroup in each one.

I would be grateful If anyone could help me with this question with different scenarios.

Thanks for your help and your consideration.

For a dual homed firewall or proxy, the answer is yes.

Just some examples:

  • you have two physical networks -> 2 vSwitches

  • you have two different locical networs on the same physical switches -> you can use more portgroup on a same vSwitch

If you want to share physical NICs between portgroups for load balancing or failover - one vSwitch.

Otherwise two vSwitches.

Thanks for reply

So, let see if I get it right, for example, If I have Server which one of its VM should work as Firewall or Cache, It's better to have two vSwitch.

Yes.

If you have two different network and you want to build a VM that act as firewall/gw/proxy you may use 2 (or move) virtual NIC, each on a different portgruop.

If you have different physical network (like in the example, if you want to isolate the LAN from the Internet), thant you have to use 2 portgroup on 2 different vSwitches.
