TRUNK, ETHERCHANNEL NIC Teaming solution assistance

We are setting up ETHERCHANNEL NIC teaming connection from ESXi 5.5 vSwitch with 2 active vmnics to Cisco physical switch in TRUNK mode.

All Cisco switch configurations were completed successfully and now the time has come to make proper adjustments on the VMware host.

Article describing our situation:

VMware KB: Sample configuration of EtherChannel / Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) with ESXi...

There are several things needs to be done on VMware host:

1. LOAD BALANCING needs to change to ROUTE BASED ON IP HASH for our scenario.

2. Then, we need to change VLAN number from its original default of VLAN 0 to 10.

QUESTIONS:

Would we lose a connections to VMware management host if we change the load balancing setting on the vSwitch to IP HASH?

Instead of changing Load Balancing on the entire vSwitch can we change individual VM Networks load balancing settings that only affect that network for testing purposes?

If we get disconnected by changing Load Balancing settings (or VLAN #) how do we get back into the ssh console on the host? Server KVM only allows connect to the main menu.

Once we do get to the console what are the commands to be used to recover or change the VLAN?

Hi,

QUESTIONS:

Would we lose a connections to VMware management host if we change the load balancing setting on the vSwitch to IP HASH?

it's possible if there is something you wrong with the config (vlan assignment, portchannel config, vswitch config...)

Instead of changing Load Balancing on the entire vSwitch can we change individual VM Networks load balancing settings that only affect that network for testing purposes?

If u have enough Host you may think to vmotion your critical VMs to other host and take one to test config. Also if u have remaining vmnics you may use them to create new vswitch and test your config.

If we get disconnected by changing Load Balancing settings (or VLAN #) how do we get back into the ssh console on the host?

you can activate the shell on DCUI see this VMware vSphere 5.1

http://kb.kaminskiengineering.com/node/264

Once we do get to the console what are the commands to be used to recover or change the VLAN?

you can even re-create portgroup/vswitch using shell CLI (some useful command are listed in this link VMware ESX/ESXi command line reference on vDS Distributed Switch and vSwitch | kb.kaminskiengineerin...

you can configure VLAN on the DCUI console / Network config.

To accomplish this we are using two cisco switches (production and spare.) We do not have vMotion license.

If we change the IP HASH settings for vSwitch it will only affect vDMZ and VM Network Port Groups, it will not affect Management Network kernel for some reason.

Is it possible applying IP HASH settings to vDMZ/VM Network only as oppose to vSwitch, as shown below?

We moved to spare switch and only VLAN 20 was working but not VLAN 10 (VM Network) on the ETHERCHANNEL configuration. Any idea?
