Separate physical management switch

Hi

A customer has requested that I uplink the vSwitch which contains the ESXi Management Network VMkernel Port to a separate physical switch.

This got me wondering what would happen if the other vSwitch which contains the VM traffic started to experience problems related to the physical switch it is connected to.

I can't see how any host isolation response would take place as the Management Network VMkernel Port would still be up and functioning.

My feeling is that this design is best avoided and that the Management Network VMkernel Port is connected to the same physical switches as the VM traffic, vMotion traffic, etc.

I've been reading VMware vSphere Design and it does mention the option of using two separate physical switches but it states you will obviously have two Management Network VMkernel Ports. However, the book doesn't state whether these are the same switches carrying VM traffic.

Thoughts?

Sean
