(I posted this a few days ago in the VCenter area, but I've not received any comments)
We’ve been using standard switches in our environment. We’re looking at migrating to 6.0, and I want to take to opportunity to convert over to the distributed switch environment.
I have a question about port counts and groups on a distributed switch.
When you create a port group on distributed switch, does the number of ports you set for the port group apply to the entire switch, or is that the number of ports in that port group for each host? And when you create the port group, do the “number of ports” count toward the maximum port count of the switch?
We have about 15 active VLAN’s. In our Vsphere standard switches, we have a port group for each VLAN. The concern I have is in setting up the port counts in the virtual port groups. Since the number of servers in each vlan varies as new VM’s are created or removed, I would want to make sure I set a high enough port count in each port group, maybe around 200 (or 250 ports on some of our main groups). If that “number of ports” applies per host, it would add up to a lot of ports very quickly as new hosts are added.
