Networking connection drops to virtual machine

I have set up a new ESXI 4 host with one virtual machine on it. They currently are both in the same subnet 172.16.1.207 and .207. When i run a ping to the virtual machine it drops often. Have i perhaps misconfigured the NIC? There is only the one instance of server 2008 on the host. I hve also noticed that it cannot install VMTools on the instance but i am not sure if that is related. Any ideas on what i can check/change?

Did you type .207 by mistake? If not - you have duplicate IP address, which explains everything.

sorry that was .206 and .207. I was thinking of giving the server a completely new ip in a diffferent range.

IP address is good then.

What exactly happens when you try to install VMware Tools? Waht is your ESXi and VM hardware configuration?

DL380 G5 4 mb memory and a normal 146 GB drives. The ping only drops to the instance and that is a semi random pattern. IE i will get 40 success then 20 drops then90 good then 15 bad etc.. Looks sort of like a loop but dont see how that would happen.

Are there any errors on the physical switch?

Is there any device with .207 address on the network?

run "ping -t x.x.x.207" and shutdown VM.

there is no other device with that ip address in use. I do only have one nic plugged in so i may plug in second and have one physical nic for management and one NIC for the vritual network.

It should work even on one NIC.

So, what's your VM confiration and what exactly happens when you try to install VMware Tools?

it fails with an unable to connect to mks error. We also get some occasional errors with " the request failed because the remote server took too long long to respond."

Is there a problem with pings to ESX too or just to VM?

just to the VM

You might want to look into the Windows Firewall of that Win2008 VM -- as I remember, Win2008 doesn't respond to pings by default. Go into the Windows Firewall settings via Control Panel and engage File Sharing and see if the problem disappears.

the firewall is disabled and in any case only some pings are dropped. I have now installed new cables for both nics and separated management nic from server nic.

I am actually having the same issue. But using a IBM BladeCenter. Have connectivity to Host but drops pings to Server 2008 VMs. File Sharing is on and all machines have permission. Have swithed out the switch modules with same results as this poster. Is this a vSphere BUG??
