Moving from VSS to VDS and how many to have

Having some trouble deciding on how many VDS's we should have in our organisation.

We have 4 clusters all under one site, expect for 1 of them they are all running 2 VSS, one for data and one for iSCSI storage. The 1 cluster that is different is the latest Production cluster which is still running a VSS for the iSCSI but the data is running over a VDS.

Each cluster's data network is identical and connect to the same core switch, all vlans over all clusters are identical

Each clusters iSCSI network runs over it's own set of switches and do not touch each other so very isolated.

I'm a fan of moving our Data network to VDS's but I have seen multiple posts on how to set them up for Sites and I've been wondering what is the best for our environment.

I have heard that normally it is 1 VDS to rule them all but I'm more thinking 1 VDS for each cluster and not just one for the site.
The reason behind this is that each cluster's role is very different and I would like to work on the clusters in isolation and know that if I make a change in one it wont effect the other.

Prod Cluster-1 (5 hosts) <== Production cluster for all applications apart from our main web base claim system

Dev Cluster  (6 hosts) <== Development cluster for all development work

UAT Cluster (2 hosts) <== User acceptance tests before accepting application changes

Prod Cluster 2 (2 hosts, this has the vds) <==  Production cluster for our main web base system

So, what do you think 1 per site, 1 per cluster or stay with VSS

First, go to vDS without doubt 🙂 And about how many vDS, I don't like the idea of just one vDS for the whole environment (that includes dev/test) but one vDS for clusters is too much if you have clusters with similar roles, and because of this I suggest one vDS for both Prod Cluster and another one for Dev/UAT Cluster.

One thing to consider is that at least until you go to 6.0 you won't be

able to vmotion between VDS objects. If this isn't a requirement then

multiple looks workable for you as long as you don't mind creating VLANs in

multiple places.
