Migrate ESXi 7 hosts and vCenter connected to a portgroup on vds to two new NICs

Hi,

We have nine ESXi 7.0u3 hosts and vCenter 7.0u3 in our VMware datacenter. We are using virtual distributed switch and connected all vmkernal adapters (VMDK0) to the same portgroup as the vCenter with no VLAN id.

Now we are going to migrate this porgroup to two new NICs trunked and connectes to the same network with the same IP-address but with VLAN id 10. Is that possible without loosing the connectivity and how can we do that?

I`am looking forward to your feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Audun.

Hi,

if you add physically two new nics to each esxi host, you need to put the esxi host in maintenance mode. After the new nics have been added, you could configure a standard vswitch. Evacuate the vms from other esxi hosts with vds to esxi host with vss until each esxi host has the new nics. In vCenter you can migrate from standard to distributed vswitch.

Assuming you're using as vlan tagging method external switch vlan tagging as well.

See hereIt is best to have access to the ESXi hosts, although you might not need it. If something goes wrong, you can access the console of the ESXi hosts.
